California Developer Plans $2B 'Green' Community That Will Create 12,000 Jobs
(STOCKTON, CA) -- Californians enjoy their reputation of thinking big. And the 50-year-old A.G. Spanos Cos., is no exception.
Company executive vice president Michael Spanos has unveiled plans for the development of a $2 billion "environmentally and economically sustainable" community that will generate 12,000 jobs and over $15 million in annual revenue for Stockton, CA.
The envisioned project is called The Preserve.
Spanos has told city fathers the project will create a permanent Green Belt, protect and enhance Stockton's wetlands, attract new businesses, add a new community hospital, reduce reliance on autos and is projected to reduce carbon emissions by at least 50% compared to typical developments,
"These are tough times for Stockton, but my family has always had great faith in our city and its future," said Michael Spanos, Executive Vice President of A. G. Spanos Companies. "Our new project comes at a time when our city needs help the most. The Preserve is unlike any other project in Stockton and I am very proud of the many innovations we propose to include."
"The Preserve will be founded on four key principles," says David Nelson, Senior Vice President of Land Development for A.G. Spanos Companies.
"First, the new community will be environmentally sustainable. Second, The Preserve will be economically robust, creating new jobs and tax revenue. Third, The Preserve will create a permanent green belt in Stockton's northern edge. And fourth, The Preserve will be the result of intensive and thorough public input - a process we have already begun and look forward to continuing in the months ahead."
"The Preserve is on track to be endorsed as an official One Planet Community, joining a prestigious network of the world's greenest neighborhoods," says Greg Searle, executive director of BioRegional North America, the environmental organization that developed the 10 principles that make for a sustainable community.
The Preserve is being planned as an eco-community by the San Francisco office of Gensler, a world renowned architectural and design firm.
"We are thrilled to lead a team of scientists, experts, and planners on a project that will bring economic, environmental and social vitality to Stockton," says Michel St. Pierre, Director of Planning and Urban Design at Gensler.
"The Preserve will introduce advanced sustainable practices and hopefully will serve as a model of responsible development for the rest of the country. For us this is a very exciting project."
Founded in 1960 by Alex Spanos, the A.G. Spanos Companies has its corporate headquarters in Stockton, California and regional division offices in Florida, Georgia, Nevada, Texas, Kansas, Colorado, Arizona, North Carolina, plus Northern and Southern California.
The Spanos family's business interests also include ownership of the National Football League team, the San Diego Chargers, as well as the Spanos Berberian Wine Company and Bell Wine Cellars in Napa Valley, California.
